Despite originally failing to live up to expectations at the box office, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has gained a cult following among fans in the more than ten years after it first debuted in theatres.
With its upcoming animated spin-off series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Netflix hopes to capitalise on the movie’s cult following. The Scott Pilgrim television series, based on the eight novels that were published between 2004 and 2010 and were adapted from Bryan Lee O’Malley’s original Scott Pilgrim comic, will recast the film’s actors in voice roles.
In addition to Mary Elizabeth Winstead reprising her role as Ramona Flowers, Kieran Culkin playing Wallace Wells, Aubrey Plaza playing Julie Powers, and Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Michael Cera will return as the movie’s title character.
In the first film, Flowers, a rollerblading Amazon delivery girl, falls in love with Pilgrim, a bass player in a failed indie band. But before he can earn her love, he must defeat her seven nasty ex-boyfriends.
The animation’s trailer, which shows a cartoon Pilgrim thwarting his enemies, seems to follow a similar plot. Along with writer BenDavid Grabinski, O’Malley is the series’ writer and producer. Edgar Wright, the movie’s director, is a member of the group and an executive producer.
