Notably, legislators attested that the trespassers descended into the legislative arena from the visitors’ gallery, with their motives shrouded in ambiguity.
The disturbance took place during a session in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament. Both legislative houses experienced a brief suspension before resuming their scheduled proceedings. Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla remarked, “We are scrutinizing the matter and have enlisted the participation of the Delhi Police in the investigation.” He further asserted that, based on initial findings, the released smoke within the chamber seemed “benign” in nature. Detailing the event, lawmaker Danish Ali informed reporters outside parliament, “Two individuals leaped from the public gallery, unleashing smoke, causing widespread chaos. Security officials eventually overpowered both intruders.” Notably, this breach coincided with the 22nd anniversary of the prior deadly assault on India’s parliament, resulting in the loss of 14 lives, including five assailants.
Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other dignitaries paid homage to the victims of the 2001 parliamentary attack, during which 14 individuals, including the five attackers, met their demise.
